Оборот be to1) Оборот be to (в том случае, если глагол be употреблен в настоящем времени) используется при обозначении события, которое, согласно плану или договоренности, с необходимостью должно произойти в настоящем или будущем. Оборот be to часто употребляется в приказах, инструкциях и программах.The train is to arrive on time — Поезд должен прийти вовремя.
The next dance is to be mine — Следующий танец должен быть моим
You are not to leave school without my permission — Вы не должны покидать школу без моего разрешения
The medicine is to be taken after meals — Лекарство нужно принимать после еды
2) Если глагол be употреблен в прошедшем времени (was/were), оборот be to используется для обозначения действия, которое должно было происходить в прошлом.I was to send him a letter — Я должен был послать ему письмо.
3) Конструкция be to + perf. infinitive (см. Perfect infinitive and Perfect infinitive passive) используется при обозначении события, которое должно было произойти в прошлом, но не прозошло.They were to have met us — Они должны были встретить нас (но не встретили).
4)а) Оборот be to может использоваться в условных придаточных предложениях (Conditional sentence):He had been a fool to spend so much money on Mildred; but he knew that if it were to come again he would act in the same way. — Глупостью с его стороны было потратить на Милдред столько денег; но он знал, что если бы все это случилось еще раз, он повел бы себя так же.
б) в реальном условии оборот be to употребляется в случае, если одно событие (обозначенное в главном предложении) должно произойти раньше, чем некоторое другое событие (обозначенное в придаточном предложении).John needs to improve his technique if he is to win gold at the next Olympics — Чтобы выиграть золото на следующих Олимпийских играх, Джону нужно будет вначале улучшить технику.
The law needs to be revised if justice is to be done — Чтобы справедливость могла восторжествовать, нужно прежде изменить законы.
